Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an intensive outpatient treatment program that combines individual therapy with structured DBT skills training groups. This evidence-based approach is designed to support adolescents and adults who struggle with emotional regulation, chronic mental health challenges, or a history of psychiatric hospitalizations. DBT is especially effective in treating Borderline Personality Disorder and related conditions involving impulsivity, self-harm, or interpersonal difficulties. Independent Management Services is proud to be a state-certified provider of comprehensive DBT services.

DBT is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that combines traditional behavior change strategies with mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches. While CBT focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviors, DBT emphasizes balancing change with acceptance. It also incorporates structured skills training in mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

A full course of DBT typically lasts about six months to one year, depending on individual needs and treatment goals. Some clients complete one full cycle of skills training, while others choose to continue longer for additional support and skill mastery. The duration can also vary based on whether you’re participating in a comprehensive DBT program or individual DBT-informed therapy.

DBT services are available both in person and through secure online telehealth sessions. We currently offer one DBT skills group exclusively via telehealth, and individual DBT therapy is also available in this format for added flexibility and accessibility.
